This coming-of-age narrative explores adolescent longing, social hierarchy, and the emotional toll of belonging to spaces built on appearance and status rather than empathy. Through Lola’s journey, the piece examines how girlhood friendships can simultaneously offer validation and quiet harm, and how self-awareness becomes the first act of freedom.

Article Excerpt

Ah, the sting of adolescence those fragile, electric years between 12 and 18 when everything feels urgent, raw, and magnified. It’s the age when you’re growing out of the familiar, your body betraying you with its uneven leaps into womanhood. Standing in front of the mirror, you might catch sight of your awkwardly sprouting chest with its unevenness and convince yourself, in that aching moment, that you’re the only one cursed with such a problem a problem that isn’t even a problem.

This was Lola. Twelve years old, seven long months away from her thirteenth birthday, and convinced that her world was teetering on the brink. Thirteen, after all, was the golden ticket to belonging the coveted age that made you eligible to join the most exclusive clique in JSS3 Green. To the girls of DOMA School, turning thirteen was what turning twenty-one was to grown-ups: a rite of passage, a marker of legitimacy.

“Why is my birthday so far away?” Lola groaned, fumbling with the buttons on her pinafore as she got ready for school. To an outsider, it might seem trivial what’s the rush? A birthday will come when it will. But to Lola, it wasn’t just a date on the calendar. It was her entry pass, her audition for the queen bee circle: a group of six girls, aged 13 to 15, who ruled their class , the quintessential teenagers: glossy with confidence, always at the center of attention. They moved like a synchronized dance, laughing at jokes only they found funny, flawless hairstyles, and an air of untouchable coolness.

Lola had spent weeks studying them with the meticulousness of a spy. She noted their every move, memorized their preferences, even strategized about who to avoid talking to so as not to ruin her chances. Joining them required more than just charm it required precision…..
